The
practice of Surveying and Mapping is regulated by state laws in order to protect
the public. Approximately 2,500 registered surveyors and mappers in Florida alone
currently are authorized to practice, having passed two-day board
examinations administered by the state. Licensing boards in the U.S.,
such as the Florida State Board of Professional Surveyors and Mappers,
oversee the registration process and ensure that high-quality services are
provided to the public. Since 1988, a bachelor's degree in surveying or a
related subject has been required for state registration in Florida in order to practice. Professional
groups support the UF surveying and mapping effort. Over $150,000 has been
donated for faculty development. Another $100,000 has been given for
renovation of Reed Lab, and an additional $200,000 has been earmarked for scholarships.
Valuable equipment has been donated and an active advisory committee meets
regularly.

The UF
Geomatics Program took delivery of a GS-200 3D laser scanner as a donation
from Trimble dealer Southern Laser
of Lutz, Fl. The GS-200 uses a pulsed laser which reflects off an object’s
surface, enabling three-dimensional coordinates of the point to be
obtained. By scanning the laser across the field of view, coordinates of a
multitude of points – termed a point cloud – are generated, which gives a
precise representation of the surface shape. This instrument will allow UF
Geomatics students to have hands-on experience in the use of a terrestrial
laser scanner.

Cardinal Systems LLC
has been extremely generous in providing us with the softcopy
photogrammetry software – Vr Mapping .This software has been selected by
NASA for use in 3D
analysis of potential tile and wing leading edge damage. Vr Mapping
facilitates the use of images from hand-held cameras for three dimensional
measurements and analysis. Mr. Mike Kitaif, the development manager of the
software has been on campus several times to demonstrate the applications
of the software in real world situations.
