Project Overview:The overarching goal of this project is to identify hemlock genes that are involved in resistance to the hemlock wooly adelgid (HWA). We propose to identify hemlock gene sequences and associated gene expression data in response to HWA infestation.  Susceptible and resistant hemlock species will be compared to provide insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying HWA resistance, and to provide information for developing molecular markers for breeding. This study will provide basic biological (physiology at the HWA target cell level) information and community genomic resources with relevance to HWA resistance gene identification and development of HWA resistant varieties of hemlock.
